What are partial dentures and flippers?
Both partial dentures and flippers are designed to replace missing teeth and restore basic function and appearance, but they serve different purposes and timeframes.
Partial Dentures
A partial denture is a removable appliance which is custom made for your smile that can replace one or more missing teeth. Typically, a partial denture is made out of mixed materials including a metal or acrylic base, customized replacement teeth, and clasps that anchor to your existing teeth. Partial dentures are:
- A long-term solution: Designed to last 5–10 years with proper care
- Tailor made: Matching your bite, jaw, and smile
- Durable: Can withstand daily chewing and speaking
- Removable: Easy to clean and maintain
- Supportive of facial structure and help prevent shifting of remaining teeth
Partials require healthy, natural teeth to support the appliance and are ideal for replacing one or just a few teeth.
Flippers
A flipper is a lightweight, temporary denture often used as a short-term tooth replacement while you’re waiting for a permanent solution (such as an implant, bridge, or partial). Flippers are:
- Designed for short-term use: Often worn for weeks or a few months
- Created with a quick turnaround: Can often be made soon after tooth loss or extraction
- Lightweight: Made of acrylic and easy to insert and remove
- Affordable: Great transitional option
A bit less durable compared to partial dentures: Not designed for long-term wear or heavy chewing
Flippers are often used to maintain the appearance of your smile or hold space after tooth loss until a long-term plan, such as a partial denture, is in place.
